About

Built for firms too small for an IT department and too serious to go without one.

BetterOps is a technology operations and operational-readiness partner for registered investment advisers and wealth management firms.

Why BetterOps exists

There is a specific gap in the market for advisory firms between roughly five and fifty people. Below that size, a capable IT provider is genuinely enough. Above it, firms hire someone internally to own technology and operational risk. In between, firms are running real money, real client data, and real regulatory expectations on a technology estate that nobody has formally been made responsible for.

The usual options do not fit that gap well. Managed service providers are built to keep systems running - a valuable job, but a different one from governing an estate, clarifying vendor accountability, and documenting how the firm operates. Large consultancies are structured for engagements considerably bigger than yours. So the work tends to fall to a COO or a founder who is already fully occupied running the advisory business.

BetterOps was built for exactly that gap, and deliberately for one type of firm. Specializing means we already know what an advisory practice's systems look like, which questions matter, and where the recurring weak points are - rather than learning your business on your time.

How we work

The operating model comes before the tooling.

Most technology problems in firms this size are not tooling problems. They are questions of ownership, sequence, and documentation that no one has been assigned to answer. Buying software before answering them tends to add a system rather than solve a problem.

We tell you when something is not worth doing.

A prioritized roadmap is only credible if some things land at the bottom of it. Part of the job is being clear about which risks a firm of your size can reasonably accept, and saying so plainly rather than selling against every one of them.

We stay in our lane on regulation.

We help firms become organized, documented, and resilient. We are not a law firm, an auditor, or a compliance consultancy, and we will not pretend that better technology operations is the same thing as a regulatory opinion. Where a question is genuinely legal, we say so and work alongside your counsel or compliance consultant.

Documentation is a deliverable, not an afterthought.

Work that exists only in someone's memory has not really been done. Everything we do is written down in a form the firm can use after we leave the room - including if you decide to continue with someone else.

Who you work with

BetterOps is a small, senior team, and that is a deliberate choice rather than a stage we intend to grow out of. The people who scope your assessment are the people who conduct it and the people who sit across from your leadership to present the findings. There is no junior handoff, and no account manager between you and the work.

The firm was founded out of more than two decades in enterprise technology and operations across complex, regulated environments - including capital markets, financial services, and utilities. BetterOps applies that discipline at a scale that suits an independent advisory firm: the same rigor about ownership, controls, and documentation, without the overhead of an enterprise programme.

We work with a small number of firms at a time. If we are not the right fit for yours, we would rather establish that on the first call than three weeks into an engagement.
